100 Day Raw Food Challenge

Since going raw 6 weeks ago I've encountered pineapple lip rash (note to self: always sip pineapple smoothies through a straw!), a mango skin allergy (exactly like a bad case of poison ivy) and candida. Has anyone else encountered other issues or allergies related to eating raw foods? Any cautionary tales to share?

That's so strange. I'm highly allergic to many, many things, and since going raw, my allergies have improved dramatically. It's like my system is not on such heightened alert, so it doesn't feel the need to attack everything ever. The only thing I'm still extremely, extremely allergic to is soy. I'm hoping to get off my allergy meds eventually!!! (although I will continue to avoid soy forever.)

I really can't eat a lot of tropical fruit. Pineapple gives me heartburn, and if a mango is the least bit unripe, I'll get full blown hay fever type allergies from eating them. When I lived in Hawaii I was a total allergy mess when the mango trees were blooming.

I always thought I was allergic to onions when I was eating cooked food because after eating them I'd have terrible heartburn. But I think it was because I always ate them with bread or pasta or other gluten laden foods. Now I can eat onions and no heartburn at all.

Oh no! I can't imagine life without cilantro. You poor thing! And thanks, I am feeling better, but will use straws with pineapple smoothies and gloves when handling mangos from now on.

The entire nightshade family of plants (eggplant, peppers, tomatoes, potatoes) are horrid for me. Raw, cooked, whatever.

Near anaphylactic shock when I eat them. Needless to say, I stay away.

I ate some oatmeal at the farmer's market with a compostable fork. Turns out the fork was made of potato starch- I had a severe rxn from that! How pathetic!

I've heard from other raw foodists that this ONLY happens to them when it's not organic produce, so they figured it was the pesticides etc. they were reacting to...
...and the oils on citrus etc can cause reactions...
...another reason to wash produce!

Actually, mangos contain a chemical compound in their skin that is the same toxin that causes poison ivy rash. If one stays clear of the freshly cut skin, peel them carefully, and never eat even a tiny bit of the skin, there shouldn't be any problems unless you are allergic to the flesh of the fruit itself. I'm going to try them again in a month or two when I'm sure I'm all the way through detox. And I'll make sure they are the organic variety, too.

I have never bruised easy and since I've been raw almost 2 weeks, I have about 9 bruises all over my legs and arms...Is this a bad sign????

I discovered that walnuts burn the roof of my mouth.

Bruising easily can be related to a vitamin C deficiency, which is really odd for someone eating a raw foods diet. I would check with my health professional.

Yes. I'm also allergic to mango, as well as pineapple if I have too much, and recently just found out I'm also allergic to paw paw. They make my lips and mouth inside feel itchy. Sooo sad.
