100 Day Raw Food Challenge

Lisa

Anyone know of any great resources for designing a raw kitchen?

The only thing I have found so far is an e-book by Nomi Shannon that is 39.95! Too much for an e-book. I'm moving, and know what I like about my current kitchen for raw prep, but if there are any other resources, I would love to check it out. I am starting with a gutted kitchen. Also, if there's something that really works for you in your kitchen that you couldn't live without, please share it with me.

Oh I am on the same page with the HUGE refrigerator. I am going to duplicate the appliance garage I currently have, it is the best! I've got the blender, juicer, and processors in there. So very convenient. I am going to make my counters larger than standard in some areas, and an extra large island. Also want to have some recycling right in the kitchen. I was thinking of a rolling shelving unit for wheatgrass and sprouting that could go in front of a kitchen window, and be rolled outside when desired, or even to another room if need be. I love the idea of an automatic watering system! Never thought of that, but still puzzling over it a bit. I'm in the country...going from 2 acres to 8 forested acres. Just down the road, less than a mile actually. The water is very hard, but great tasting. Thinking of a water softener though. I need to look into it more. I'm not sure how that affects the drinking waters content, if it does at all. Do you know? Any other ideas?

Dont know of any better (more affordable) resources that the experience of your peers - lol. If the top of my head, if I had my kitchen to do over again I would:

NOT put in lower kitchen cabinets....those always store pots & pans and I have VERY few of those now days. I would put in shelves for cool storage of home ferments and SPROUTING SHELVES (with an automatic watering system) in their place

I would also make sure I had a HUGE freezer-less refrigerator
I would have LOTS of replace/repair-able chopping block countertops
I would filter any city water (in kitchen & bath)

Did you mean to send a link? Or should I try to search it?

Make sure you have plenty of storage space for jars...of all sizes. One thing I have searched for in vain on the Internet is raw kitchen designs and pictures. All I have ever dug up are lists of stuff you can put in a raw kitchen. There was a thread in the forum last summer/fall where rawfu'ers were posting pix of their kitchens. This is the closest I've ever seen...even on raw food videos on YouTube they never seem to give a kitchen tour! Hey! Lisa! This could be your calling! Since you get to start with a gutted kitchen...you can build the dream raw food kitchen and show us how you do it!!!!!! What a blessed opportunity....One of these days I'm gonna make it back to Sauvie Island for a bike ride and a tour of your new raw kitchen!

I just signed up to get the raw by design ebook recommended by goRawMe earlier. Has anyone else? What do you think of her ideas?

Just did. Will check it out as soon as I'm done here and will let you know. What did you think? It was difficult choosing the most important elements for a kitchen from her long list of choices in the survey, didn't you think?

Thanks Tiffany, I now have jar storage on my list. I currently have plenty of storage for jars both in my kitchen and in the attached garage, but I hadn't thought of that yet for my new kitchen. Well now I know it's not just me-trying to find this info on raw design. There sure are a lot of lists of necessities for a raw kitchen, but not actual design! We are NOT getting a microwave. Do you have one? I can't wait to NOT have one....my husband is fine with it too.

I will definitely post progress and pics. I am still struggling with a couple things though. Like putting a gas stovetop in the island, or leaving it blank for prep. Sometimes its harder starting from scratch and having to make those choices, rather than having them be pre-existing and not a choice. I am going big on the frig though. We are also putting in a small beverage frig that can also hold all of our stainless steel water bottles, and whatever else. Those take up a lot of room in the frig, and since we actually USE them, they need to be conveniently located. Putting in an extra sink too. You WILL BE coming to visit me! We won't be moving in for about six months though.
