Raw Fu

100 Day Raw Food Challenge

It's Thursday and Penni is in the house, but with a special guest appearance. Two topics of discussion fuel tonight's flame and they both have to do with the head (mentally and physically).

We'd like to hear from you if you have experience on either topic.....yeh, you're going to have to watch the video to know what I'm talking about!

So tell me, HOW ARE YOU DOING ON DAY 17??

Hey Penni,

I started practicing yoga diligently at 23 and and that and raw foods helped heal me and get me off meds which I was on since 16 years old.

Taylor should start practicing yoga! It really helps to bring the mind into focus when you practice the meditations and breathing excercises! The physical practice helps to regulate the dopamine levels, and with a diet rich in silicon, chlorophyll, and other vitamins and minerals, it will really help to bring balance to her body.

Starting at her age would be better than waiting til in the 20's. I wish I would have started all that healthy stuff when I was that age!

Love and Light,
Tawni

From what I've seen in my nephew, it not only makes him not want to eat, it also eventually caused him to gain weight!

Great video, & your granddaughter's a sweetie! {& so beautiful!}

I haven't totally done the no-poo thing, but am heading in that direction, I think...
...I love the vinegar & lemon suggestions, thanks!

Penni: I can't believe you are a grandmother. You and Taylor are both lovely! Very brave of her to share her experience with everyone. Thank you!

Ooh, the grease can. My mom sometimes used a milk carton...maybe that's the Canadian thing to do:-)

I'd like to go without shampoo someday but I'm having a hair crisis right now, on top of horrible skin, so I think the last thing I need is to be zitty, with *greasy* hair that keeps falling out. I'm not high-maintenance, but I have enough vanity to not want to be that greusome:-)

Someone on this thread mentioned that their hair stopped falling out after quitting the shampoo, so that will be my motivation to try it.

This is so interesting and to be honest I've not heard of no poo before, well the concept of it. I didn't realise it was even do-able!
Thanks Penni, for such a wonderful informative video..no way grand-daughter?? I kept replaying it and saying oh maybe that was a mistake, yeah Andrew agreed...then I thought a bit oh wow I get it! simple eating gives simple thinking! ;o)

Taylor you are totally gorgeous, just too cute! ADD or ADHD is small in comparision to how beautiful you really are! We so love and adore you here ;o) and your bobbing along on the trampoline. ;o) Im sorry for your struggles though, it must be really hard but other intelligent ppl have made great suggestions above such a brilliant lot is rawfuer's. You're so lucky to have each other!
.
I've used the apple cider vinegar as a leave in for dandruff years ago, but when you got wet....oh..man..transported straight to the fish&chips store phewwe "vinegar head"

Thanks Penni and Taylor too much sweetness on one screen!! What you spoke about was so very interesting to look into further, but your videos always do this for me Penni, thanks for opening my mind to something new! Im so grateful to you both Love you xxx

I'm not sure I could stand being a no-poo'er, though I have considered it.

That being said, what do you do on those odd occasions you can't help being around cigarette smoke? Like, some of my extended family smokes and whenever I'm around them, I wear a hat with my hair all tucked into it because I can't stand the smell of smoke in my hair. I also have to rinse my sinuses with a neti pot when I get home. Ick!

Just wondering...how would you get that smell out? I'm wondering if the lemon juice or vinegar rinse would work?

I really believe you can train the mind to be calm through meditation....I have been doing it for 7 years and it has made me a lot calmer and kinder. I practice loving kindness meditation (metta)....basically just focus on your breath and let go of your thoughts for about 20 min a day..if a thought comes, let it go...yoga is also really good for becoming calmer..there must be a good hatha yoga place somehwere close to your house...iyengar yoga is restorative, well known and very good...they can teach you to stay calmer and balanced...it will be gradual but it will last......I also founf that holy basil pills are amazing for keeping calm and well...they feel awesome and are gentle on the body.....hope that helps

Penni,

First of all, i feel you on the no poo thing. I went 5 weeks without any shampoo and i just couldnt do it. I now use dr. bronners which is super natural....

as far as ADHD, i was also diagnosed with it. I did the medication thing for a year or so and i quit.... it made me not hungry and it formed into an eating disorder (this was 5 years ago)... i cant imagine ever going back.

Believe it or not, raw foods has totally changed my ADHD problems... I am still fulllll of energy but it is a different kind. I am not UNBALANCED like i felt i used to be. Being raw has helped me focus and control myself.

Here is a great discussion on it that was on rawfu not tooo long ago:http://raw100.ning.com/forum/topics/teenagers-and-add?page=1&co...

And here I always thought Taylor was your youngest daughter, Penni. Wow, a granddaughter. Another blessed gift from Gordon.

I feel ya and no judgment here on the grease. I've tried the no poo route several times now. Longest I've gone before caving has been 7 days. You know what? I'm just a poo kinda gal (all natural, no sodium laurel sulfate, thank you).

Taylor, I don't have ADD nor ADHD. But what I can share with you is this... After leaving refined and highly processed food behind and transitioning to a diet of raw, living foods, I have a mental clarity that I have never experienced before in my life. It's quite hard to explain or describe, but it's like, before, I was walking around under the constant influence of alcohol and now, I'm not. The thing is, I had already been completely sober for 18 years before I even began transitioning to raw foods. Keep trading those Dr. Pepper's in for green smoothies! :D

OK I am not sure why that made me cry. It could be because I have a 12 year old daughter on meds for ADHD (and a 9 year old son), but my daughter suffers more emotionally and socially. Also as we discovered that my kids were ADHD I had a revelation! No one knew what my problems were growing up, I got the you are being lazy and not applying yourself bit. I still struggle to this day, and wonder if the impulsivity helped with my weight issues. Anyways, i would love some advice on natural ways to help my children as well as myself! I have 5 children 12 years down to 5 months, and most dats I am going out of my mind!

I have slight ADD and I do best when I exercise as much as possible, which also keeps my weight down! Also, being outside in the sun and of course eating a whole foods diet. I'm not completely raw but the flour and sugar are what do it for me the most. Take it one step at a time and work more on adding in healthy stuff then eliminating the unhealthies, eventually the stuff will be crowded out or not present as much. Best of luck on getting off the meds, I couldn't do it too long I had a psychiatrist who was a drug pusher and wouldn't accept that none of the stuff he put me on worked so he kept switching me hoping to find something that worked, but I just canceled my appointment and stopped seeing him. With these things I am much better and when things flare up I make sure to to them more and breathe deeply

I am an oily hair sufferer. I hate it. I have tried leaving it for weeks and I just feel disgusting. When I have oily hair my whole body feels oily. My back becomes oily and I just feel horrible. I just have to wash it everyday.

On a TV show the otherday in Australia, they did a similar experiment but for two months and showed the results http://health.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=798250

Hi Penni
I didn't wash my hair when I grew dreads many moons ago. It took about 3 weeks before the oil production normalised and the smell vanished, and then my hair seemed clean enough (I say seemed, I was a teenager, not sure I cared much back then) but I did it during summer holidays and hung out with a bunch of equally scruffy dreads-sporting types, so it didn't matter. I'd find it hard to do nowadays.
If you really want to go through with this then I'd suggest you use something to soak up the grease in between. I use Lush's dusting powders, as they're relatively free of nasty chems, but I'm sure some homemade concoction of cornstarch and/or riceflour with some essentail oils would do the trick. Rub that into your scalp. Leave to work for a while then brush it out. I'm a blonde, so it works for me, being a red head you might find it shows up a little. Alternatively, try this: http://www.bumbleandbumble.com/product/spp.tmpl?CATEGORY_ID=CAT72&a...
Good luck STINKY! ;)
