In the olden days low income people were the ones with gardens. My old 8th grade teacher who is in her 90's told my cousin that the Great Depression didn't have as harsh an impact on their area since everyone had their own garden anyway.
I talked to my 97 year old Aunt and she said they had a huge garden, bought some dried fruit from Sears Roebuck and dealt with the winters by canning, pickling, preserving and storing stuff in the root cellar. In her own words 'there was always plenty to eat'.
During WW2 Eleanor Roosevelt encouraged everyone to plant 'victory gardens' - 1/3 of the vegetables in the US came from Victory Gardens one year.
Where I live, almost everyone grows a garden. It's wonderful! I'm extremely fortunate to be living where I can have plenty of garden space.
Someday I'll have a victory garden to share with all the single moms who want to raise their children healthily, despite financial hardships...
...& it'll be organic, too! &I'm hopin' for next spring!
I remember my Grandma's garden...& my mom's...& pulling weeds for a penny a weed!

They are actually feeding livestock chicken poop, turning herbivores into carnivores and cannibals all for the sake of cheap meat. It's so disgusting. .
