Hello Everyone!
I just returned home from the farmers market with, among other things, a bunch of radishes and a persimmon.
Can I use the radish greens in salads and smoothies?
And, how do I eat a persimmon? Last night I watched a recent Angela Stokes blog entry about her eating a persimmon. So when I saw them at the market, I thought I'd give it a try. But I forgot to ask the guy exactly how to eat it!
Thanks for your help.
Love and hugs,
Meredith
Sarah, Thanks for that link. I'm waiting for mine to ripen! Have you ever tried this tip he mentions?
Tony's Tip
To speed up ripening of Hachiya persimmons and eliminate the tannin, put them in the freezer for twenty-four hours. Then defrost and use as you would a perfectly ripe persimmon.

I just ate my first persimmon the other day too! I had heard how good they were from one of the other raw fu members, so when I saw some I thought, I've got to try one of these! I didn't know what ripe looked like, and I didn't know how to eat it. I picked one that didn't look as "bruised" as the other ones. Then I ate it like an apple, or a tomato. Later I looked in my fruits and vegetables book and saw that you are "supposed" to eat it by scooping out the insides and eating it with a spoon, and discarding the skin. I got some more and picked the ripe "bruised" ones and ate them with a spoon. MMM, so good. Now, radishes, I think are irritating to the stomach, so I don't eat many of those.
i love persimmons too! the waiting is definitely the hardest part! i don't like the fuyu's until they're totally soft, too. they're too chalky for me until then. i've got a hachiya that is 99.9% ready to go.
the radish greens are going to taste like radishes, only more so. like mustard greens. i would NOT put them into a green smoothie with an expectation of a yummy sweet sensation! just thinking about eating them is giving me a headache. i would keep them to a bare minimum, for some hot spicy punch, and probably in a salad where you can pick around them if they're too hot.
I love persimmons- but they can be very messy! They're super sweet, and here you find many varieties from yellow to red.
Eat them like a tomato- take off the stem, you might want to cut out the tougher core, but you don't have to.
They're great in smoothies.
Although I am not a big fan of radish, I like the greens. Their taste is completely different than the roots, they are mild and fresh, I have never had some that were spicy.
Before eating I stir them with a dressing or blend as a smoothie, because they may have little pricks.
yesterday I made a smoothie with 1 ripe banana, a spoonful of sesame seeds and a bunch of radish greens. It was really yummi!
Wow, thanks everybody for all of your advice. Tonight my persimmon feels slightly softer than yesterday. So I'll keep waiting for it to get squishy. I think it's the Fuyu variety. It looks like a squat tomato.
Oh, and I forgot to mention.....I also bought a GORGEOUS savoy cabbage at the market. Tonight I'm going to make some wraps with the leaves for dinner. I also went and looked back through Bunny's videos looking for her recipe for Sesame Coleslaw. (I found it on August 15th). I'm going to make some of that with the cabbage, too. It was soooo fun to watch some of her old videos and see again what a transformation she has made! It also filled the void for me of not seeing recent videos of her while she's in Hawaii. We miss her, right??!!
Hope everyone has a great evening, and thanks again.
