100 Day Raw Food Challenge

So I have been eating more raw for a while. I focus on salads most often. I have been eating at least one to two salads a day and after about 4 hours I am hit with crazy gas and bloating. Usually I am at work and can't just go around farting everywhere. Sorry to be blunt but this is what I want in my body but have to sacrifice how I feel during the day. WTH? My system has never seemed to get used to this salad meal. Should I be doing something different? I digest the green smoothies really well, but don't want to drink them all day.

Also- is there a limit to how much nutritional yeast you should be adding to your meals? Can you be eating too much?

Hmmm, tell us what you're putting in your salads. Something in there might be a particularly gassy food.

Sorry, I don't like nutritional yeast, so I can help you on that one. But if you''re putting it on your salad. It might be the culprit.

Whatcha got going on in those salads?

Raw bell peppers don't work for me, but cooked are fine, and dehydrated might be OK. Other foods that I have problems with are raw garlic, and maca powder. Try fewer ingredients in your salads, and isolate the culprit.

Eat smaller salads. Chew slower and more thoroughly. The thing is, if you put a lot of hard to digest whole plant fiber/ cellulose into your stomach, you are going to end up with incomplete digestion. Cows have a rumen for a reason. We don't. So eat smaller salads (think side salad size in a restaurant) and chew well.

In David Wolfe's book "Eating For Beauty" he says that a lot of people don't produce enough hydrochloric acid to digest greens, especially when we first go raw. He recommends fresh lemon juice before (in water) and/or with a salad (use in the dressing). Also eating fat (avocado, olive oil, etc.) along with any sulfur-containing vegetables: radish, onion, garlic, kale, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, etc. helps them digest better.

I eat huge salads & love them. I just have to make sure I have lemon juice & plenty of fat in my salad. Tougher greens like kale (& grass) can't be broken down enough by chewing, though, so that's where the cow has an advantage. Heehee! :) If I eat kale, I wilt it first by rubbing/smooshing it with lemon, salt & oil/avocado. If I want wheatgrass, I juice it. Greens are amazing sources of nutrition!

Thanks everyone! Wow I am learning a lot. So in my salads most of the time and today is usually, sprouts, kale/spinach, onion, cucumber or zucchini, and something red either tomatoes or red peppers, and then either avocado or nuts.

The nutritional yeast is sooooo good on salad. I think you are right Laura, I need to chew slower and more so that I break that stuff down before swallowing.

I appriectiate all your messages thank you!
