100 Day Raw Food Challenge

Replies to This Discussion

I love using my food saver and mason jar attachment for helping keep the juices fresh. And, I use a GreenStar juicer which (you're right) supposedly allows storing juice for a couple of days without much nutrient degradation.

Just thought I would share the info on the juicer that I just bought:

Other juicers just weren't in my budget either.

Thanks, Amy! I've actually been storing juices (in the fridge and the freezer) for the past few years but I wanted to know everyone else's thoughts, and how you all feel about storing 'em.

I would love to have a GreenStar some day but right now it just isn't in the budget. :-D

I purchased one of these wide-mouth jar sealers recently, after I picked up a FoodSaver at a garage sale for $5. I need to get the vacuum tube today & try it out. I thought, even if it just saves the juice for an additional day it would help. It does make a big difference the type of juicer you are using, a GreenStar will retain enough nutrients that the juice couple be stored for up to 2 days. Also make sure there is as little air as possible in the container (less oxidation will occur) & keep it in the coldest zone in your fridge.

Thanks for sharing, Bette. I wonder why it works so well for some and not for us??!!! Who knows...

I had put mason jars in to freeze, leaving lots of head room as no cover until frozen.....I had so many bust and I do not know why, especially freeing them with room at the top...hmmmmm.

Yay! I'm glad you're feeling positive vibes about storing juice as well. :-D

I don't think it's cheating. I would store juice in mason jars and stick them in the fridge. I did this for three days at at a time. I use apple cider vinegar and cayenne in mine.

Michele, water & juice expand when they freeze (that's why ice floats - the crystals form with little bits of air in between). That's why I leave the lids off.

Bette, I wonder if your jars were too full? I never fill mine more than 1/2 to 2/3 full - if the top freezes before the bottom, then the bottom part expands outward & breaks the jar. It's even more likely to do that if the jar has a narrow neck, because the narrower part freezes faster. Plastic is probably safer. When I use plastic bottles, I still leave room at the top, & if I'm putting a lid on it, I squeeze some of the air out first so the liquid has room to expand - I've had plastic bottles crack before, too. ;)

Save green bottles as the darker the bottle you store it in the better. Wine bottles a good for this and yes COLD PRESED honey and ginger will help keep it happy and fresh.
