There are tons of theories about what causes diabetes. Some say it's a virus, Dr Graham put out the theory that when you consume too much fat it blocks the sugar from being absorbed. I hope you find what works for you!

I have a few times had normal blood sugar for several days without even Lantus or a basal rate of Novolog (I have a pump now). When I told a previous doc of mine about it, he said, "Maybe you're really type 2." I am definitely NOT type 2, & he scared me, saying that. So after that, I only went to see him only when I needed a prescription refilled or something. I'm happy to have my doc now, although I have NO IDEA what he would say if I ever told him about a time like that. :) Other ideas: I eat a LOT of fat - nuts, oils & avocados - compared to most raw foodies, but it works for me. I don't expect that everyone is the same, but I also think if I say everything I do, maybe some of it will be for you, too, so I'll keep saying it. Isn't is awesome to be able to feel what your body needs?! I love it. And I'm totally jealous of your living in so much sunshine. :) Another thing that I feel is a key for me is emotional - diabetes has to do with feeling there is no sweetness left in life (if nothing is sweet, there is no need to produce insulin to take in the sweetness), which for me translates to an inability to receive/take in joy. I have done a lot of emotional work, learning to enjoy everything! I'm still working on that part, too.

At 12:13am on July 17, 2008, Angie said…: I FINALLY have a doc who is fine with me eating mangoes & drinking coconut juice, as long as my sugar levels are good! Other docs have not been so good about it... I eat for what my body wants, so it's not all the same every day, or from week to week, etc. I am lately eating a lot of berries, greens & coconut oil in things. I eat a lot of fruit, too. I find that I do really well if I have sprouted wheat from time to time, and I feel I am missing something if I go too long without it. A couple of things I have learned about type 1 diabetes is that the body often (if not always - I'm not totally sure) cannot turn beta-carotene into vitamin A. So that's probably why I didn't feel good when I tried to drink lots of carrot juice at first. It also means (for me, at least) that I have to occasionally take a vitamin A supplement - from fish liver oil - because the ready-to-use form of vitamin A is only in animal products: butter & liver, mainly. Another thing I recently learned is that vitamin D is a really big deal in diabetes. I was really deficient recently. Sunlight is the best, if you live where you can get good sun year-round (south of Colorado, I think). Otherwise, sunflower seeds and mushrooms have small amounts and then it's back to fish oil. I prefer not to have to take fish oil, so I'm trying to get plenty of sun now that it's summer, and I eat lots of sunflower seeds in the winter, but fish oil is better than not feeling good all the time. I'm hoping this year to get enough sunlight so I won't have to take the supplement; we'll see. I love young coconut water for the electrolytes (they get low when my blood sugar is high). One more thing for tonight: I drink Kangen water. If you don't have it, it's a HUGE difference for me - the water is alkaline & has antioxidant properties & there is more to it, but it has made a night & day difference for me - it's 6 times as hydrating as regular tap water because of what the machine does to it. It has kept me out of the hospital more than once because it rehydrates & alkalizes so well when I've had high blood sugar. I'll write more as I think of it. I don't want to overwhelm you :)

Do any of you know...?... and Ugli fruits.

If there is such a thing as a blender & food processor combination? I think there is, but I can't remember the name/brand.

ALSO,

My boy toy brought home some Ugli Fruit last night. I love Ugli fruit... A LOT... He's a nurse and many of his coworkers are from the Philippines and over seas (in general) and they love him so much (he's the only male nurse there... hehe..) that they ALWAYS bring him fruits and trinkets...
